Respond to any two
(2) of the fifteen (15) questions on the readings for Weeks 1–5. Each question is worth (50) points. Write
a 250 word response to each of
the questions you select (about one double-spaced, typed page for each question).
Write a one page
essay response to each question in which you:
- Refer to specific details and examples from the
author’s work(s) in order to support your points.
- Write your essay in a clear, well-organized, and
coherent manner.
- Use complete sentences and correct spelling,
grammar, and punctuation.
- Revise and edit your essay as necessary.
Your assignment
must:
- Be typed, double spaced, using Times
New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. Check with
your professor for any additional instructions.
- Include a cover page containing the
tile of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the
course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required
assignment page length.

Analysis Questions: Choose
two (2)
- Analyze Chinua Achebe’s attitude toward his
characters in “Civil Peace.” How does he convey that attitude in the
story?
- Explain the title of Bessie Head’s story, “The
Collector of Treasures.” Who is the collector in the story, and what is the
significance of the description? Identify and explain what the “treasures”
in the story are.
- Explain the title of Nadine Gordimer’s story, “A
Soldier’s Embrace.” Analyze how the embrace serves as a symbol in the
story. Discuss the character’s misgivings about having been kissed by two
soldiers, one white and one black? What is the significance of her
feelings in the story?
- Analyze how Ngugi wa Thiong’o creates and builds
suspense in his story, “The Return.” Comment on whether or not you
expected the ending, and why you did or did not.
- Analyze the use of the orange as a symbol in
Ghassan Kanafani’s story, “The Land of Sad Oranges.” How does it relate to
the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel that is the setting for
the story?
